Grace watched the rightmost rotor change approximately every two seconds, and when it reached "ℓ," the next rotor to the left advanced one step. He deduced that the Eridians used a base-six numerical system, likely because Rocky had three fingers per hand and used only two hands for counting. The symbol "ℓ" represented zero, and the sequence revealed that Eridians read information from left to right—a one-in-four coincidence that Grace noted with satisfaction.
Measuring Time and Length
Grace timed Rocky's clock with his stopwatch, waiting for the third rotor to complete a full lap.
